Kelly Haole – Hero Award winnerMakawao, Hawaii, resident Kelly Ha’ole is Knife River Corporation’s most recent Hero Award recipient for his life-saving efforts. A ready-mix driver for Knife River’s Hawaiian Cement Division, Ha’ole is also an experienced surfer and swimmer. He was in the right place and the right time to save two tourists.

In February Ha’ole and a friend heard a tourist’s cries for help, grabbed their surfboards and risked their own lives to rescue a mother and son. Bystanders had already rescued the father.

Pounding waves and extreme conditions made the rescue difficult. Ha’ole believes that if it weren’t for their quick and decisive actions, both people would have died.

“Kelly’s and his friend’s actions are a true reflection of their character. We developed this award to recognize heroes like this, who take measures to help people just when they need it the most,” said Knife River Corporation President and CEO Bill Schneider.

Ha’ole is Knife River’s 10th Hero Award recipient.
